SALT RIVER SIPHON REPAIR

This four phase Design-Build project for the Central Arizona Project involved assessment and repairs to the interior coatings of the Salt River Siphon. The Salt River Siphon is one of the largest segmented pipelines in Arizona and spans underneath the Salt River just downstream of the Granite Reef Dam. The siphon is 8,900 LF long and constructed from 21-foot diameter steel pipe that is buried more than 50 feet below the river bottom. During a 72-hour outage in the fall of 2018, CAP staff and Achen-Gardner crews were responsible for planning and executing the dewatering of more than 25 million gallons of water contained in the siphon and for developing and maintaining safe access and conditions within the pipe during work operations that included a full inspection of the interior. In 2019, utilizing a longer outage period from October 30th through December 10th, the project team planned and performed the dewatering and access control development for the Salt River Siphon and managed a specialized subcontractor who performed repairs and replacements for a significant portion of the protective coating system in the pipeline.
