Project Owner: City of Phoenix
Project Type: Construction Manager at Risk
Construction Dates: 05/21 to 07/22

“We have been very pleased with Achen-Gardner’s performance on the City of Phoenix Zone 3D and 4A project. Their team embraced the challenges of installing a 66-inch steel pipe in a sensitive neighborhood, and they proactively ensured that the needs of the residents and the local elementary school remained at the forefront of their activities, while safely completing the work on time.”

-Tracy Moraca, Brown and Caldwell (Program Manager)

A critical portion of the City of Phoenix's drought mitigation efforts, this project included the installation of more than 7,200 LF of new 66" welded steel water transmission main from a booster pump station at the 24th Street Water Treatment Plant to 20th Street and Orangewood Challenges included:

  • Construction adjacent to Granada Park and Madison Heights Elementary School.

  • Rocky soil conditions requiring grinding during excavation.

  • Native plant salvage including a detailed inventory of affected plants and plans for salvage/protection-in-place.

  • Coordination with Flood Control District of Maricopa County due to location of the transmission main through a designated floodplain.

  • A critical schedule requiring multiple crews working concurrently in several areas.

Scope also included the removal of 4,992 LF of an existing PCCP water line within the alignment of the new pipeline and the installation of three valves (66" and 48"), three fire hydrants, 1,774 LF of curb and gutter, 541 SY of sidewalk, 30 SY of valley gutter, four ADA-compliant ramps, 6,552 SY of asphalt paving and patching, and 14,916 SY of pavement restoration.
